The Prospector

Here is a new song, written shortly after (and heavily inspired by) my trip out to Death Valley, and finally recorded this weekend, half a year later.

The Prospector | lyrics

Try to listen with headphones since the bass line is pretty essential…

The vocals frustrated me as usual, so as usual I spent less time on them than I did on the instrumental parts. I’ll be sure to redo them next month. Also the tempo transitions are awkward, so it almost sounds like two songs instead of one. (When I play it on the acoustic, it sounds like one song.) Next month…

I meant to play the mandolin on this one but never got around to it… doh!

The rhyming scheme for the fast part is, for once, somewhat unusual (but not obviously so). See if you can figure out how it fits together…

Nice, another AJ Shankar single. :)

Well I first tried listening with my cheap computer speakers (double tweeters, not much bass there), and I thought my speakers were out of phase. Then I connected my pimp headphone setup, and it sounded like you were singing behind or above my head, slightly to the right. A bit eerie.

I think it’s a combination of putting the instruments in the foreground and your comparatively soft singing in the background.

Also, I think the transition is more of a key/modal issue than the tempo. To be honest, I think your earlier songs were better than this one. But this does (at least to me) portray a vast and open land such as you might find in Death Valley, where I have never been.

Keep it up! I’ve started writing something, but it seems to crawl without a proper keyboard.

Yeah, hopefully when I remix it’ll sound better (and more cohesive). I’d love to check out a real studio for a day to see how things are actually done. I’d probably learn as much then as in five songs’ worth of my own time.

    AJ!

Again, I’m totally impressed. Dude, your guitar playing is great…how the hell did you improve so fast? My skills continue to atrophy :(

Hey, thanks! I’m still a crappy player. It’s just easier to sound good when you get to make up the stuff yourself ;)
